Why is the water so cloudy the day after I change our fishs water?
I have a medium sized fish bowl with 3 fish in it. I have the rocks and a little rock house in there for them to hide in. I can change their water and the very next days it is cloudy and dingy looking. We have city water, so we have to use some purifier drops in the water, but that shouldnt make it cloudy that fast. Anyone know the answer to this?
This occurs because bacteria grow and settle in the bowl due to fish food falling to the bottom of the bowl, fish waste, and the carbon dioxide that fish breathe out. All of these factors cause an accumulation of waste by-products that the bacteria normally consume; even the bacteria themselves release waste by-products that they "recycle."
When you change the water in the bowl (which you should do on a regular basis) not only are you stirring up uneaten fish food and solid waste, but you are disturbing the bacteria as well. This disturbance is often referred to as "cloudy water syndrome" and typically occurs when water changes are performed.
If the water does not eventually clear up (it should once the bacteria settle and re-populate), there might be something going on with the hardness of your water. For example, if the KH, or carbonate hardness, of the city water is high, this is indicative of high calcium levels that could cause cloudy water. You might want to purchase a water hardness test kit at a local fish store. I think they're around $10 or so.
