Why is it illegal for other companies to fix prices, price gouge, and speculator unless you're an oil company?
Search at any station, there are at least 1 or 2 gas station near others with the same exact price for the gas or very near it. Their prices go up and down in unison as season and depending on the "market" conditions (ie, artificially reducing the supply by refusing to continue to refine, speculation excessive, etc.) Why are the laws against the price fixing, price gouging, and earnings do not apply to oil companies? I can see Republicans mourn, "but that is our free market capitalist society at work, there is nothing wrong!" but please remember that a free market will not work when essential goods are controlled by a cartel or monopoly, so there are laws against them. Why not apply these laws to the oil companies? Can we expect some free-market determination of prices with a gallon of gasoline?
Gas stations buy their products from the refineries, (usually the closest that make the products of these stations sale). It makes sense that the price paid by the stations in a particular area would be very similar due to the price charged the refinery in your area, transportation costs, etc. Did you know that NO new refineries have been built in the United States in the last 25 years? The main reason for this is the cost involved in compliance with all government environmental regulations. different seasons have an impact on which products refineries produce. In winter, heating increases oil production. In summer, gasoline production increases. There is simply no capacity refining enough to meet the demand. There is no law keeping you (and your friends) formation of an oil company, or building of a refinery. Go ahead and check it. We all buy gas if your company could be sold for less than the companies "greedy, price-fixing." You can even see a profit after 20 or 30 years.
