HELP, urgent problem with Word, Acrobat, OpenOffice and Mozilla?
My wife has a Dell Latitude laptop, since 2006. She always used, without problems, the following software: OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office Mozilla Firefox browser as Avast anti virus Spybot anti-malware filter Today my wife received a e-mail from your college through your private network (therfore, should be safe). This email had two attachments, one of a Word and Acrobat. After that she tried to open the two files mentioned, an error message appeared and now can not open any of the Word, or Acrobat on your laptop. Open Office will says that "access denied". If she tries to save a new file creatd ORG (equivalent to DOC in OpenOffice) is not allowed. Even Mozilla has problems while it appears that Explorer and Chrome are not affected. He tried reinstalling Mozilla and OpenOffice.org, but in vain. She ran Spybot and your antivirus, but not marked nothing. Would you have any suggestions on what to do?
Assuming you have already sounded the alarm with the school's IT support group, try this: First, boot into Safe Mode with Networking. (See below for details.) That sometimes keeps malware from protecting itself. So if you have an antivirus, make sure you have the latest virus definitions and run a full scan with it. If you do not have one, many people here swear by Malwarebytes (it's free). I suggest you also download Ad-Aware Free and Spybot S & D (free), install them, update them and make them full scan in safe mode with networking. Also, disable System Restore to evict copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there. To enter Safe Mode with Networking: a 1.Log and restart your machine. 2.When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly. 3.Select Safe Mode with Networking from the resulting menu. 4.Login. If malware has changed your password, try logging in as administrator. By default, Administrator has no password. 5.The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different. 6.When end up doing what needs to be done, quit and restart in normal mode again. Another trick that may allow anti-malware and / or your setup to sneak malware is changing the name of the anti-malware program itself. The names of the files and their locations differ between control programs against malware, but the procedure is always the same: 1.In Windows Explorer, locate the folder with the anti-malware. 2.Change the program name (which always ends with an exe.) practically anything else, but keep the ". exe" part. 3.Run that. Note that even if anti-malware programs get rid of the malware, which can not be able to reverse the effects. Search the Web for possible solutions. Full update and run regular scans, not just when you think you already have malware. Good luck. Note: There are free versions of these programs a good reputation in these sites.
