I have a mechanical filter Top End ... questions about how to change the filter cartridge?
I have a Top Fin 40 power filter in my 20 gallon tank. Only purchased such a large filter because before the creation and purchase of all for my tank I read that the higher the gph, better, at heart anyway ... so this process 200 gph. My question is, how often should I can change my filter? It contains only a carbon filter, a sponge does nothing, and I wondered if the carbon filter cartridge is needed or whether they should try to find some other cartridge. I am perfectly content with the filter, as it is quiet and seems to work well, but I worry that I need something new cartridge, other than just changing. Moreover, if only to change (carbon canister), is the nitrogen cycle itself start over? How do I replace it without causing problems cycle? Any help would be great ... thanks!
Well as long as none of the Fish is upset by the current of a stronger filter, which should not be a problem. By changing the cartridges, you have to save the bacteria that live in it, leaving your used cartridge to float a bit in trying new cartridge to build their own colony. This could take a while. I usually just keep the filters 2 filter temporarily for a few days. If not, then yes the nitrogen cycle restarts and devastate your tank. In addition, filter pads are supposed to be changed every 4 weeks. Says table. However, you can rinse a cartridge in water tank old when you do a water change to get some of the debris and keep using it. Will to get a new filter when the water begins to flow down the sides of the cartridge rather than through.
