How long will carbon or carbon final filter media?
I just finished a seven-day treatment with Melafix water, and may SteriPEN (one carbon) back into the water. I have a lot of old filter carbon everywhere and I m wondering if I can use that - or wins / lose its effectiveness? This matter has to be years old. I'm not talking about carbon that has been in the water - I'm talking about things in small boxes that are just laying around waiting to be used in an aquarium.
I will not date. While it has been in a box, without water or air flowing through it actively, it will remain active. "Active" in this case means able to bond with chemicals, toxins, etc. at the molecular level. Permanent carbon chemically bonds to all kinds of things that do not want in your aquarium. After all the surface areas of all the carbon is 'full', all have bonded to chemicals, etc., becomes useless. All this depends on the amount of chemicals flowing through it. (In some industries that still use charcoal to clean and polish the air, but only the works with the air being pumped through it.) Now, the activated carbon does not deteriorate in a box. You are totally fine to use. If you ever go to buy more, make sure it is "activated" carbon, not just carbon. Activated carbon has been heated in furnaces to 8000 degrees centigrade temperature or some other ridiculous. This makes about eight times more effective (which makes it more porous ...) than regular carbon, not unlike charcoal your fireplace .... In my tank, I can replace mine almost every month, but I have a well stocked tank with lots of food, and a large filter that works hard. Also I have access to cheap carbon substitution: P
