PH of 8.8?
I just bought an API test kit water and tested the water in my aquarium for the first time. He said that the pH was 8.8, which was the upper limit test for what might have been even greater. I immediately did a water change but do not change much, dropped like 7.8. I doubt this is the pH my natural tap water, how can one bring the pH of 7.4 for stability? Certainly the two guppies and two otos seem like they are in perfect health. Could gravel vacuum effect pH?
It would happen to keep African cichlids or salt water and you are using a mixture of salt ready for this? Both contain buffers designed to raise the pH, so this could be the source of your pH level (though it still seems a little high - ensure that will not add too much mixing for the water - if you have a lot of rock or decoration, these take up volume of the tank so a 75 gallon tank can only be holding 60 gallons of water as an example). If this is not your situation, the first step taken is to rinse the test tube with water and soap and rinse thoroughly. Then get a sample of water from the tank and tube breasts a couple of times to repeat the test. It does not happen often, but there may have been something in the pipe itself that may have the results thrown out. By conducting a test, if something in the tube was responsible, may partly lava, giving it the second lowest reading (after his change of water). Also clean a second tube and perform a test of your tap water if that's what you're using to fill the tank to see if there is a difference. If there is a difference of more than 0.1 to 0.2, look at what you may have in your tank. Make sure you follow the instructions in the kit - adding the correct number of drops, keeping the bottle tightly up and down (with the bottle tilted change the size of the drops, and therefore their results), and wait the appropriate amount of time. The fact that the fish seem to be well is another thing that makes me question the accuracy of test results. As the pH is above 8, the fish should begin to have a cloudy appearance in producing excess mud to protect your skin and gills of excessive pH. In extreme cases, can even see the skin and scales and fins eroded fraying. They can also store a test of your water sample to confirm their results. It is even possible that inclement reagents in the kit. While aragonite shell and material raise the pH some, not elevate it to that level. I keep freshwater and marine tanks, and with just coral and aragonite, stables and 7.8 pH. Has something else is happening if the pH is above 8.
