Is it time for a new vacuum?
I have a Kenmore Progressive vacuum that I bought about 3 years ago. It was a pretty great vacuum until the last 6 months or so. The first thing I noticed was that it just keeps getting louder and louder. If there is a clog I don't know how to get to it. I have been replacing the HEPA filter quite often (once a month) because it is just packed with dust/dirt. Do I take it in to get worked on, or just go buy a new one. The motor alone costs $85, but a new vacuum would cost a few hundred. I really did like this vacuum for the first 2 years.
Take it to a repair shop and have it looked at before you give up. (Or you can take it apart yourself.) There are bearings and belts that stretch and wear. They need to be replaced. The cool thing about Sears/Kenmore is the availability of parts. Visit their web site for parts diagrams, etc.
The other thing to consider is a good cleaning. In addition to the HEPA filter, there may be another filter that's clogged with pet hair, carpet fibers or dust. The same goes for the brush assembly. Make sure it's not clogged up with yoyo string and Christmas tree garland...
