Of the two, the canister will be the better vacuum for general cleaning. The stick vac has it's place, but not as a whole house cleaning system.
The UltraSilencer series are a decent vacuum, but by no means are they a great vacuum. Consumers report failures of electronics and other issues with this brand of vacuum.
For the money, you can get a much better machine in the form of the Oreck Quest Pro if you want to stick with a canister, or in a Dyson DC33 or LG Luv300B if you go with an upright.
