how do i clean my room air con? How do i check the gas level and, vacumn the pipe and fill gas into the pipe?
Window A/C's come in two basic styles. 1. The whole unit slides out of the case. The case stays in the window. 2. The whole unit comes out of the window case and all. The case has to be removed from the unit rather than the unit removed from the case as in 1. above. Which ever, you now have the A/C out of the case, out in the yard, and set up on saw horses or whatever you have so that you can work on it. Looking at the unit from the front you will see the coil that is inside the window when the unit is installed in the house. That is the evaporator coil . Just back of that you will find a blower wheel, back of that a double shaft fan motor, back of that a fan blade, back of that the condenser coil. Remove whatever panels you have to in order to access the coils and the blower wheel. Use a plastic garbage bag to wrap the motor up and use duct tape to make sure it is properly covered from the water you are going to spray. Use a pump up bug sprayer to spray CONDENSER coil cleaner through both coils and also on the blower wheel. Let it foam up and then wash it out along with the dirt with a garden hose and nozzle. DO NOT bend or damage the fins on either coil with the water. Where ever you find the thermostat knob, fan switch, ect on the front of the unit is the cover for the electrical panel. Do not spray water directly on this panel. The unit is now clean. Remove the garbage bag from the motor and if it has oiling plugs (some do, some don't) put 4 to 6 drops of oil in each hole. Replace the plugs. Look to the left and to the right at the bottom of the evaporator on the wall that separates the fan motor from the blower wheel for a small tube that allows the condensate from the evaporator to flow out into the area where the motor is. Blow it out good with the water hose. You will have noticed by now that the coil cleaner only cleans coils. Any other cleaning you want to do you will have to use Mr.Clean, ect. Now the unit is clean. It likely had a filter made of a foam like substance. Clean it well and from now on clean it once a week whether it looks like it needs it or not. You can get new material (foam, metal mesh) at Lowe's, Home Depot, or the like. Window units are like refrigerators. They are small sealed systems. They are either charged or not charged. The charge is small and exact (critical). The days of close enough are gone. You are prohibited by federal law from working on this aspect of the unit. You have done about all you can do. Hope this helps out. If you decide to call a service mechanic, you will know what he is doing and why. You will know if he/she missed anything.
