Alpine Industries Business Review
With over two decades spent in the air purification business, Alpine Industries produces and markets ozone room purifiers. Previously it was discovered that charged ozone was effective in attracting and stripping air of harmful substances including suspended particles. However, after research into this area, it was discovered that ozone ought to be limited to certain levels in enclosed spaces where humans breathed. Following regulation, Alpine Industries recalled all its ozone generators that did not meet US federal regulations and replaced ozone generating plates I all units.
Alpine Industries, for over two decades has relied on independent distributors that ran a network marketing model, for marketing of its ozone generating room purifiers. For the purposes of Alpine Industries, this was an effective system for marketing its products. With the market for room air purifiers fairly limited, taking the traditional marketing method may have proved an expensive proposition for Alpine Industries. However network marketing proved to be a blessing for the company since it reached out to a more focused consumer group, referred by people using the products.
Network marketing is an alternative form of marketing when compared to the traditional method. The traditional method relies on using a preexisting network of distributors (usually large corporations that work in conjunction with each other) who transport the product form manufacturing, various stages of transfer and storage and finally to the retail outlet. This process costs the manufacturer money and that cost is added onto the price of the product. There’s a further cost for having the product vie for shelf space against competing and even non competing products. This cost too is added to the price of a product. There’s another more expensive cost that needs to be added on to the price of the product – and that’s the promotion cost; which involves creating advertising and running the advertising across various media available like television, radio and print.
Through network marketing however these costs, though present in the final price of the product, are passed on to the consumers of the product. Here’s how it happens. Say for example, a person ‘A’ purchases a product and the independent distributor package. That person would then become eligible to sell similar product directly to another individual ‘B’. The sales process will provide ‘A’ with a commission or fee for the effort in making the sale. (In traditional marketing, this cost would have been spent on an advertising agency or a media platform that ran the advertising). Now, this person ‘B’ would also become eligible to market the product and on making a sale to person ‘C’, the person ‘B’ would directly make a fee. At the same time, person ‘A’ too would make a small fee. This is called residual income and is a feature in all network marketing business models. In this manner, every time there is a sale, each member that made a sale before in the chain leading down to the last sale (up to a maximum number of generations) would benefit from the sale being made.
