How can I remove and replace an old "electrostatic" air cleaner?
My furnace has a Honeywell electrostatic air cleaner (black magic air cleaner, witchcraft air cleaner? It doesn't seem to do anything). I am pretty sure that this thing is not effective at all. My question is; is there any way that I can remove and replace this with a standard pleated air cleaner by myself (without the aid of a $8000 dollar an hour HVAC contractor)? Is there pre made filter boxes available that aren't real expensive? I am mechanically inclined too, just not hugely knowledable in the HVAC department.
A lot of the Honeywell electrostatic air cleaner can be replaced with a 20X25 media air filter typically 5" Merv rated at about 10 to 16. The filter cost around $35 and needs to be replaced about every 6 months to a year depending on how many hours the unit runs and the conditions of the area. Repair of the unit can be expensive typically up to $1000.
Honeywell as well as other manufactures make filters to replace the electronic elements. These filters are nearly just as efficient as the electronic air cleaner.
